Last month, the Hampton Jones Design team competed in the 2019 Auckland Architecture Association Public Good Design Competition.
Our “tongue-in-cheek” title “Greenwash” Auckland reimagines the Dominion Road Flyover with a fresh and new urban design vision, reclaimed from traffic and redesigned as a walk and cycleway to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. The public can enjoy panoramic views of the city with plants and vegetation, reducing vehicle congestion and carbon emissions making the city a better place for everyone.
Beneath the flyover is an unoccupied grass field in which we decided to utilize as a food truck area, welcoming locals and visitors to eat and relax. We also wanted to re-design the existing car tunnels and underground walkways to replicate the Waitomo glow worm caves with artificial lighting tying everything together to create a New Zealand native bush vibe.
Unfortunately we didn’t win… however it was still a super fun side project for our team to get creative together!
